An overview of some useful UX/UI Tools, including Hotjar and Tree Jack

Last updated on December 16th, 2022

There are a load of good UX tools on the market in 2020. This is an intro to some of the best one’s.

Invision

Invision is a web-based programme that allows designers to easily create clickable prototypes from flat designs. Design files can be synched from Sketch/Photoshop or uploaded PNG’s/JPG’s. As well as standard desktop layouts there are also specific layouts for tablets and phones which when viewed on the relevant device give a realistic feel for the design.

Our creative teams use Invision to test out ideas for more complex interactions such as mobile menus. It’s really useful for guerilla testing and highlighting potential design flaws.

Hotjar

Hotjar is a heat mapping application that provides a visual representation of how users interact with a website. The main views are heat maps that; show where users click, and scroll maps; that show which areas of the page users spend the most time on. You can set-up separate snapshots for desktop, tablet and mobile.

Heat maps are particularly useful when doing UX reviews and design refreshes, as they can highlight where improvements can be made on the initial design.

We review a websites Hotjar data when auditing a website as part of the discovery phase.

Lookback

Lookback records visitors interactions either in ‘live’ mode or self test to allow you to see how users are using your web app. It’s a great tool for remote user testing, but isn’t cheap.

Treejack

Treejack is an information architecture click testing tool, which identifies how succesful users are in finding the correct page through a proposed website navigation.

Chalkmark

Records where users click when attempting to complete tasks.
