Understanding Cookies

An overview of some well known cookies

Last updated on January 3rd, 2024

The use of Cookies have come up quite a few times in our workplaces recently, so we wanted to provide a quick update of the main types and what they actually do, and talk about the cookie notification policy.

There are two types of cookies; Session Cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are temporary and expire when your visitors close their browser. Persistent cookies are stored in the visitors browsers and will remain their until they delete them.

Additionally, cookies can either be first-party or third-party.

Cookies can also be divided by their remit; strictly necessary cookies, analytics cookies and targeting cookies.

In the past couple of years, several cookie management tools have sprung up to help manage cookie consent. Civic cookie control and One trust are two of the bigger ones.
